Alexa's Silent Reminder

Since the onset of the Corona Virus many of us had taken to, what I call “panic praying.” Those few seconds of prayer similar to Peter’s “Lord save me” panic prayer when he took his eyes off Jesus as he began to sink into the stormy seas of Galilee. “Lord help us” or “Save us from this virus,” we say. At those times we’ve not only taken our eyes off Jesus but failed to “Be still and draw near to Him” so that we might hear what He has to say. I know, because I was one so busy with all the changes and disruptions having to now work from home instead of traveling from one construction site after another all around the state. And my prayer time suffered as a result. During recent days Dolores and I had been using our Alexa devices to remind us of a number of “to-do” lists and I thought, here’s a perfect opportunity to use this technology for another, far better purpose.

Our new Alexa reminder was set to tell us to “Come together for a moment of silence and listen to what the Lord has to say.” This reminder starts at 8:am for every hour on the hour until 8pm. But that can be set for any combination of times. But however it’s set, it’s there to remind us to take a moment to stop whatever we’re doing, come together to listen to Gods voice, if He so chooses to speak to us. And It’s been a real blessing. And who knows? A consistent reminder like that can become a habit and out grow the need to be reminded anymore. As I said, it’s been a real blessing.
