What is Truth?

“He is the way, the uncouth, and the lie.”  I still remember this satirical statement made by a fictitious demon-in-training, Wormwood, in a theatrical production based on C. S. Lewis’ book, “The Screwtape Letters” which I saw many years ago.  I found this to be a humorous play on words from Wormwood, referring to his “Father Below,” Satan … however I also know it reflects the very serious reality of the Enemy of our souls.

Satan is the “father of lies” … “not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar” (John 8:44).  He wants to take us down and will say and do anything to this end.  He is the opposite of anything associated with truth.

In today’s reading Pilate asks Jesus, “What is truth?”  Jesus answers this question in abundance in the Scriptures:  “He who sent Me is true” (John 8:26).  “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).  “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).  Our Lord is the full expression of truth and the freedom that accompanies it.

Today, when many people are again, like Pilate, questioning or downright denying the idea of “absolute truth,” the veracity of Jesus’ sacrificial love and our need to communicate it to the culture around us is more relevant and vital than ever.  The Enemy wants us to believe that “What is true for you is not necessarily true for me.”  This could only be the case if the basis for our faith were capricious and adjustable to our whims.  When we choose to hold the Bible as the foundation of our faith, our understanding of truth remains solid and stable.

In our ever-changing world, there are myriad truths I can glean from the Bible about my own identity in Jesus ... I am His “beloved” and He is mine (Song of Solomon 2:16).  He came to give me life and so I may have it more abundantly (John 10:10).  He did not give me “a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).  He will never leave me nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5).  These truths and more are the bedrock of my life, my faith, and my understanding of reality.

I choose to trust in Jesus because his embodiment of Truth makes Him absolutely trustworthy.
