The Power to Change the Past

Christ-like love that God’s Spirit imparts as fruit to his children runs deep.  Divine love is grace (charis) or undeserved favor—no performance required.  Divine love is also forgiving (agape) or sacrificial—“…keeping no record of sin…” (I Corinthians 13:5).  Such love “covers a multitude of sin…” (I Peter 4:8).

When spouses sin against each other, and they do in the best of marriages, divine love is needed to rescue, renew and refresh the “oneness”.  Practically this love is more effectual when both spouses pursue the filling of God’s Spirit.  To wallow in the pain of self-pity or the anger of vengeance is to emotionally and spiritually imprison your soul.  Dr. Lewis Smedes said it well—“To forgive is the power to change the past”, and “To forgive is to set the prisoner free and discover the prisoner was you!”  Only divine love can make this forgiveness effectual.  Just like God’s love in Christ has forgiven you, you can be empowered by the Father’s love to forgive your spouse (Ephesians 4:32-5:2).  God desires that for you.  Will you desire that from Him?  Never forget all the love you will ever need is already available within you by the indwelling Spirit of Christ.  Access it by surrendering your heart and will through prayer. Don’t let your evil thoughts of pride or anger or vengeance get in the way.
