The First Miracle

From John 2:1-12.

Today's reading tells the story of Jesus' first miracle. When I read this passage a few things stuck out to me. First of all, I noticed that Jesus' mother seemed to encourage him to perform this miracle. Good old mom was one of the first to notice that the wine at the wedding had run out. She knows that Jesus has the power to fix this problem, but why would she think he would knowing he has yet to reveal his power? Perhaps this mom also knew the bride and groom and many of the party goers and just wanted to make sure everything was just right for them on their big day... but why would Jesus care? Before we assume that this passage encourages us all to drink up, I would like us to consider how this story shows us another side of Jesus, and the first one he wants to reveal to us.

This problem isn't a big one for Jesus, he even says back to Mary in verse 4 "What has this concern of yours to do with me, Woman?" but he performs the miracle anyway. How many times do we ask God for miracles or even just small favors and think that he doesn't care. Surely the God of the universe doesn't care about our dead car starting after the 4th try or favor on a job interview.

But he does and he proves it with his first miracle. Not only does he perform the miracle at his mother's request but he turns the water into the best wine anyone has ever had. He cares for us, even when we don't think our troubles concern him. Matthew 7:11 says "If you then who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" Trust that God cares for your concerns today, and that he has the best for you, his child.
