Remembering His Faithfulness

1

Luke 23:26-38

Luke describes a bleak scene with Jesus’ followers standing now silently by as the religious leaders stole His clothes, scoffed, sneered, and then mocked Him. They taunted Him, telling Him to save Himself, stressing if you’re the King of the Jews why can’t you save yourself? And Jesus doesn’t save Himself but stays the course.
None of us are Jesus, or even close on our best days. But consider another very human person that most of us can relate to (and often don’t want to be like with all his sexual activities). Luke 23:34 throws us back to Psalm 22 - a Psalm written by David. This is a prophetic Psalm that speaks of this time now in Jesus’ life, but remember, it was also written BY David as he poured out how he felt wherever he was in that moment writing this Psalm.
I don’t want to spoil the whole thing for you, but David laments and cries out to God - begging for help and feeling abandoned. He even mentions (verses 7-8) that he’s being mocked for trusting God with his deliverance nowhere in sight. So David, a mere man (or a worm, if you’re going by his own description of himself), is in the same spot where our Savior finds Himself in Luke. And what does David do?
will declare Your name... I will praise You...
David not only sets his mind on praising God for himself, he starts telling others to praise and glorify God. He repeats the promises and past faithfulnesses of God to remind himself of God’s coming faithfulness. He ends this Psalm with both a powerful prophetic and full of personal faith statement; “They shall tell of the Lord to the next generation... they shall declare His righteousness to a people yet to be born – that He has done it, that it is finished!”
So what are you not seeing an end to? Where are you being mocked and/or tempted to give up? Declare His name and praise Him now. Remember that you will declare God’s faithfulness for this situation like you have done for many like it in the past. You will be declaring that He has done it, it is finished!
