Just. For. You.

From John 4:1-26.

In this Gospel, John shows us that Jesus is God, but he also showed us that Jesus really submitted to human limitations.

So apparently the Father showed Jesus that it was time to leave Judea and go to Galilee; and he chose to go through Samaria – actually He had to go through Samaria.  The New King James version says “But He needed to go through Samaria”.  Since He only does what the Father tell Him to do, this was more than a Mapquest decision.  There was something the Father wanted Him to accomplish; someone who needed HIM.

I can picture the disciples talking to each other as they set out.  Samaria?  Why are we going this way?  Ok, it’s shorter, but…but…there’s Samaritans in Samaria!

Most Jews would go around Samaria because it was a region of the lowest society had to offer, often referred to as ‘half breeds’ – Jews who intermarried with those from other religions – a huge ‘no no’. We might think they were a cult and steer clear of these deplorables because they’re ‘not like us’.  But not Jesus.

It was a 40 mile walk from Judea to Samaria – can you imagine?  That would be like walking on the Parkway from Brick to the Driscoll Bridge.  No wonder Jesus was tired!  And thirsty.  And He needed to rest.  So when this woman of questionable character went to draw her daily supply of water, Jesus – the man – asked her to give Him a drink.

I believe that while she was handing Him the water she asked, with a little bit of sarcasm to hide her shame, why He would ask her – an outcast - for a drink.  But outcasts are Jesus’ specialty.  it wasn’t important to Him that she wasn’t a ‘true Jew’.  Jesus – the God - knew who and what she was – a sinner in need of a savior; and He met her where she was at.

Just like He does with me and you.  He understands us, because He is a man.  He doesn’t care where we’re from, but He sure wants us to know where we need to go, because He’s God and doesn’t want anyone to be lost.  And He’d go anywhere to show us his love.  Even if no one else wants to go.  Even if He has to walk 40 miles.  Just. For. You.
