Come and See

From John 1:35-42.

“And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas (Aramaic)” (which translates Greek Petros/Peter which means rock). John 1:42

John 1:35-42 begins with John the Baptist proclaiming that Jesus is the Lamb of God. John the Baptist’s disciples hear him proclaim Jesus as the Lamb of God and they decide to follow Jesus. They literally just decide to follow Jesus. Jesus at this point did not say, “Hey, come follow me.” John the Baptist said, “Hey, look there is the Lamb of God!” and they decide to follow Him.

Jesus then realizes that these two men are following him. He turns around and asks the two men “What do you want?” The men respond with asking Jesus where he is staying and then Jesus invites the two men to come and see.

The invitation to come and see is an invite for each of us. It is an invitation that when we accept the invite it allows us to have forgiveness and restoration. This forgiveness and restoration then allows us to have a redeemed relationship with God. When we accept Jesus’ invitation to follow Him, we then are given a new identity. Our identity is chosen daughter or son. Our identity is forgiven and redeemed. Our identity is worthy. Our identity isn’t broken, sinner, or unworthy any longer.

We don’t really have a choice in this new identity. Jesus just gives it to us. Just as He did in verse 42 for Simon son of John. Jesus told him that he will be called Cephas. The same goes for us. When we choose to follow Jesus, we have no choice in our new identity, He tells us that we are Forgiven, Worthy, Redeemed.
