Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis while championing for the rights of 1,300 black sanitation workers; it was part of a larger Poor Peoples’ Campaign.

The poor and marginalized - whether due to racism in our own country or the neglect of those starving in other parts of the world - was close to his heart.

But more importantly, caring for the poor was always close to the heart of God.

In Isaiah 58, God tells the rich Israelites that their prayers were not being answered because they were continuing to go through religious rituals while neglecting the poor & marginalized around them.
