1 Corinthians 15:35-49

Understanding our future hope calls us to present action.

One of the reasons the future promise of resurrection does not impact the present is because we just can’t imagine what resurrection bodies are like. And so we don’t look forward to the future. Instead, we may even dread Jesus’ return, as if it’s an interruption to the good times we are planning for ourselves.

We want to still get married, have sex, have kids, have grand-kids…...

Perhaps we think of Billy Joel’s famous line: “I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints, the sinners are much more fun.” That’s the perspective many Christians have - our after-life is a safe but boring retirement home, or an extended church service with lots of songs that we’re just not that into.

Others of us struggle for the opposite reason. We feel we have nothing more to look forward to in these bodies. They’re old, there are more and more wrinkles, the glory days are behind us. So we don’t live with the joy and the zest and the anticipation God wants us to.

Instead of envisioning our bodies now in light of our future resurrection bodies.
