The Cycle of Death and Life

3

Something I’ve been meditating on this past week has been the cycle of death and resurrection- and how it’s so central to our faith and our walk with Christ.

Death and resurrection should go hand in hand in our lives as Christ followers, just as Christ died and was resurrected. We see throughout scripture how the death of something can bring life to something else. Death is a consequence of sin, but it’s also a path to new life in Christ through Jesus’ resurrection.

When we became born again, we died to ourselves, and became alive in Christ. Romans 6:11 says we are dead to sin, but alive in Jesus.

But that wasn’t the end of the cycle… or at least it shouldn’t be. It’s only the beginning. As we grow in the Lord and become more and more like Jesus, i believe that cycle of death and life continues until we are made perfect in His presence.

The Lord is always calling me to die to something, or put something to death- in order to bring life to something new. This week I’m taking some time to intentionally reflect on what ways this cycle of death and life is present in my life right now.

In Colossians 3:5-10, Paul tells us to put to death the earthly things within us and to have nothing to do with those things. We used to do those things when we were still part of the world- we were still dead in our sins. But now we are to die to those things, put on our new nature, become more like Jesus, and walk out our new life in Christ.

So the question is: Is there something in my life, my heart, my flesh, or my thought patterns that God is telling me is necessary to put to death so that new life can emerge

Maybe it’s anger toward a family member or coworker that needs to be put to death so that gentleness and patience can emerge. Maybe it’s greediness that needs to be put to death so that generosity can emerge. Maybe it’s selfishness that needs to die so that the love of God can emerge and we can fully love each other as He has loved us.

Will you join me this week and take a few moments to ask the Lord if there is anything He wants you put to death so that He can bring new or resurrected life to something in your life?
