Summary of the Habits We Discussed In Our New Year's Series
Below is a recap of all the habits we suggested during our recent series "Training for Godliness.” Look it over, pray it over, and consider which ones you should implement in this next season.
And here is a video that gives a glimpse of what it might look like to apply it all to your daily, weekly and seasonal rhythm - as an individual and with your life group.
Out of the 7 weeks, we introduced 6 areas where we should have habits established (*Week 1 was an intro week, which you can listen to here).
WEEK 2: MAKING EFFORT TO ENJOY HIS REST
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30
One Habit To Consider:
This is something to do at a consistent time each day, and also when you’re feeling stressed.
Get with the Lord and do the following:
- First ask Him, “Where is my soul not at rest?” Give him time to reveal it to you.
- Then confess where you chased after rest apart from God.
- Gaze at the BIGNESS of God through Scripture and nature.
- Praise and thank Him for his gracious love.

WEEK 3: ALL KINDS OF PRAYER FOR ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. - 1 Timothy 2:1-4
A few habits to consider:
- Consider joining a prayer life group.
- Get on the prayer email from Mandy (mandy@truelifenj.com)
- Write out a list of people to pray for and make time to pray through it (update the list every few months).
- Hold people before the Lord as you go about your day.

WEEK 4: EAT AND DRINK TO THE GLORY OF GOD
31 So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Questions to Reflect On / Habits to Consider
- If you took a moment to thank God for everything you put in your mouth, what would change?
- When you are extra lazy or extra anxious - is there a correlation with what you eat or drink?
- What might you need to fast from? What are you tempted to think you absolutely need on a regular basis?

WEEK 5: SURRENDERING OUR SCREEN TIME
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. - Romans 12:1-2
Some Habits to Consider:
- Consider a week-long media fast.
- Consider a regular break from just social media.
- Consider a regular break from the news.
- Consider cutting out certain apps that get too much of your time.
- Be really selective in the articles and videos you click on (even if they're "spiritual").
- Consider putting your phone down for parts of the day.
- Consecrate your phone every day.
You can watch the sermon here.
-----
WEEK 6: THE DISCIPLINE OF STILLNESS
“In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…” (Isaiah 30:15).
Some habits to consider:
- Turn off the noise.
- Pause before you pray.
- Find a quiet place that is for you and God.
- Meditate.
- Soak in Worship.
- Journal.
- Consider joining our new Lenten life group on Thursday nights (Bill@truelifenj.com).

WEEK 7: LORD, WHAT ARE YOU UP TO?
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:8-10).
5 Areas To Think About As We Ask: "Lord, what are you up to right now?"
- In this season of my life?
- In the lives of those around me?
- In my neighborhood?
- In this difficulty?
- In this small moment?

Again, here is a short video about what this might look like in your life on a daily, weekly and quarterly basis.
