Jesus - Our Hope and Peace

1

Galatians 4:4-5: But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

This is my favorite “advent” passage of scripture. It’s awe-inspiring to me because in just these two verses, the apostle Paul describes how literally everything in history past, present time, and the future hinges on Jesus and the Father’s perfect purpose for us through Him. Each part of these verses are so encouraging and fill me with such hope and peace and I’d like to share it with you...

“But when the fullness of time came..”. Literally all of time had waited for this baby, Jesus. All of history past, before Jesus was born, had to happen. The one true God, the Father, had literally orchestrated history in preparation for Jesus’ coming. The time was full. The histories of Jerusalem and Rome had converged and the time was right. He arrived right on schedule. Amazing. This gives me such peace and comfort knowing that the Father has it all in His hands and has a perfect purpose in all that I go through. It reminds me and comforts and excites me in knowing that He has a plan for me and right now He’s working out His perfect purpose for me. And when the time is full and He moves His hand, He will bring me home, to my own place, to be with Him. And I will be all He has made me to be because He will have been faithful to complete all the work He started in me and planned for me from the beginning.

“Born of a woman...”. Jesus was born of a woman, the son of God the Father. And so He was fully human and fully divine. He had to have been fully human and lay aside His divinity in order to perfectly obey the Father and fulfill the law. How awesome is it to know that Jesus himself went through and experienced everything we do? There is nothing He can’t understand and sympathize with. Nothing is new or surprises Him. And He went through everything I do so I can have a relationship with Him as friend and daughter of God.

He was “born under the law so that He might redeem those under the law”. This God-man was born a servant to us and to His Father. He was a servant to the moral and civil laws, but He was also born under the ceremonial law. In Him, the fulfillment of that law had come and with His life and death, every man and woman, present and future, could now be redeemed and freed. The price had been paid and we were rescued from the bondage and slavery to sin and Satan’s kingdom, to God’s Kingdom of life and light. Man, words just don’t do it justice. You and I have been rescued and freed from slavery to Satan into God’s kingdom! Our chains are gone and we’ve been set free! Guys, we were literally in bondage to Satan. And now we are free to become bond-servants of Jesus. Does it get any better than that? Yeah, actually, it does! Here’s how...

We have “received the adoption as sons”. Every person ever born, then and now and in the future can now become actual heirs of the Father. Anyone whom God has justified by their faith in His Son has been adopted and has been given the same name, the same inheritance, the same standing and the same rights as Jesus, the son of God. We are his actual heirs. We have His name. We have the right to claim everything that is His as ours, because of JESUS. That is some amazing stuff.

Be encouraged this Christmas season. The time with family, the opening of gifts, even the Christmas shopping are all wonderful things. While you’re doing all these things, or even if you’re not, be encouraged that our God’s got this. He’s got you. He has a divine purpose for you, just as He did for His Son, because of His Son. When time reaches fullness, He will have prepared a place for you and will bring you to His side. In the meantime, know that this Jesus was born, and lived and died and was raised to life that you may have abundant life in Him right now, and Peace and purpose and closeness with Him right now in time present.

He’s given us His Spirit, His word, other believers to guide and help us along. If you are someone who needs some help finding Jesus and aren’t sure where exactly He is in this holiday season or in this season of your life, and have questions or need some encouragement, please reach out to someone. We are created to need one another and to help one another in every season of life.

If you are someone who is experiencing His joy and comfort this Christmas season, or in this season of your life, please take some time to slow down during the busyness this season brings to reach out to those who don’t know of this Jesus. Reach out to those who have heard of Him and either do or don’t know Him personally and need the peace and comfort and freedom He brings.

And as Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”. Amen.
